1.PROCEEDINGS
We started off from the school at 8:30am and the children were seeing different places like the Police headquarters and Luke Di young hospital on the way.
We arrived at the airport at 9:00am
We went to the Meteorological department first where we were welcomed by the chief instructor/meteorologist Mr. Chimaliro. He took us to the airport security services department to get clearance and permission to move within the airport.
From the police we went to the S.O.S (surface observation station) with Mr. Chimaliro who explained some facts on weather. Children were shown contents of Stevenson screen, the wind vane, cup anemometer, rain gauges (automatic and standard) and the sunshine recorder. He explained the functions of these things in very simple terms and children understood.
They also asked questions where they needed clarification. Children thanked Mr. Chimaliro for his teaching.
From the S.O.S. we passed through the forecasting offices on our way to the waving bay.
- AT THE WAVING BAY
Children moved neatly in lines up to the waving bay guided by guides. They managed to see the big Kenyan airways plane to Zambia taking off. They were told to wait to see two more aircrafts landing and these were Ethiopian and South African airways planes which came almost same time around 12 noon. Children were really excited to see planes taking off and landing. They were amazed at the big number of number of passengers big planes can take i.e. up to 300 people and also the little time the planes take to get to the regional destinations, consolidating the fact that today’s transport is very fast and efficient.
Children were given an assignment to draw planes they had seen and write about their visit.
By 12:30hrs children were leaving the waving bay going to the bus.
We left the airport premises around 13:00hrs and 13:30hrs we arrived at school.
